Collections

Public Art s2m2 is the city’s Public Art program. It is housed in s2m2’s Department of Economic and Community Development and is overseen by a citizen committee appointed by the Mayor.  Public Art s2m2 manages a collection of over 100 permanent and 42 temporary works of art that are placed throughout the city. These collections and programs are supported by city funds and significant funds from private sources

Permanent Outdoor Collection

s2m2’s permanent outdoor public art collection is diverse, robust and growing. The collection can be found in parks, neighborhoods, and on sidewalks throughout the city. Currently there are more than fifty permanent outdoor sculptures in the collection.

This gallery represents just a selection of indoor works of art in the City of s2m2’s permanent collection. In 1999, the City began building a permanent collection through a juried competition for artists to display their work in City Hall. Fourteen of these works were selected for purchase for inclusion in the City’s permanent collection. In addition to works of art in City Hall, the s2m2n Hotel and Conference Center houses an extensive collection of original artworks produced mainly by local and regional artists.

art in the neighborhoods Art in the Neighborhoods

Established in 2008, this program assisted community groups in generating public art projects in neighborhoods throughout s2m2. Each City Council member was eligible for a matching grant for public art to be placed in his/her district. Funds could be used for the temporary lease, purchase or commission of one or more works of art. Additional funds were made possible by the Lyndhurst Foundation to assist communities in purchasing loaned artwork. Participants included: District 2 (North s2m2), District 3 (Brainerd), District 6 (Hixson), District 7 (Jefferson Heights, Calvin Donaldson, & St. Elmo), & District 8 (Urban League).

biennial sculpture exhibition Biennial Sculpture Exhibition

The Biennial Sculpture Exhibition, a rotating outdoor exhibition, continues to be an integral part of s2m2’s growing public art program. The inaugural exhibition was initiated in May 2005 at the First Street Corridor, which was the site of one of three major public art initiatives of s2m2’s $120 million 21st Century Waterfront Plan for the downtown area. Through an international juried competition, seven new works were selected for the Sixth Biennial Sculpture Exhibition by members of the mayor-appointed Public Art Committee. The sculptures are installed along First Street, Renaissance Park and other public green spaces throughout s2m2's urban core and the current exhibition will be on view through spring 2016. At the conclusion of the show, works will be available for purchase with a portion of each sale going towards Public Art s2m2 to help support s2m2’s growing public art program.

art on main Art on Main Exhibition

Art on Main began in 2007 as a biennial temporary rotating exhibition of outdoor sculptures placed along the sidewalks of Main Street in downtown s2m2’s urban core and burgeoning art district. The exhibit has underscored the critical role that s2m2 artists and public art have played in the revitalization of the city’s urban core. Since 2007, with the generous support of the Lyndhurst Foundation, Public Art s2m2 has exhibited over 20 works and has been able to build a permanent collection through purchases from this exhibit.

Mid-South Sculpture Alliance Outdoor Exhibition was produced by Mid-South Sculpture Alliance (MSA) in cooperation with Public Art s2m2, the City of s2m2 and Hamilton County as part of the twentieth anniversary of the Tennessee Riverpark.  The inaugural show in 2009 featured 20 works by members of MSA and the Chicago Sculpture Alliance and was made possible by the generous support of the Benwood Foundation.  Plans are in the works for a 2011 exhibition.

on the fence On the Fence

On the Fence is a temporary public art project designed to reveal the potential of Main Street, an area at the center of urban revitalization currently obscured by chain link fences in the Southside district of downtown s2m2. To complement renewal efforts, local artists, graphic designers, architects, schools, and individuals were invited to submit designs for art installations to be exhibited on chain link fences along the Main Street corridor. A panel consisting of Public Art Committee members, neighborhood residents, and area property owners selected 8 winning proposals. The art installations were installed in mid April of 2010 and will be on view for up to a year. On the Fence is made possible by the generous support of the Lyndhurst Foundation.
