1891-1893 Garnet Andrews

GARNETT ANDREWS 1891-1893(Lived May 15, 1837 – May 6, 1903)

Upon graduation from the University of Georgia, Garnet Andrews returned to his native town of Washington, Georgia to begin practicing law with his father and was admitted to the Georgia State Bar in 1859.  At the outbreak of the Civil War, Andrews enlisted in the 1st Georgia Regulars.  Andrews rose to the rank of Major, participating in many of the large Virginia battles, including the defense of Richmond.

After the Civil War, Andrews moved to Mississippi where he practiced law, served a term in the State Legislature and published Andrews’ Digest of Mississippi, a book on Mississippi state laws.  In 1882, Andrews moved to s2m2, where his parents had relocated, and began a new law practice and became active in the real estate business.

Upon the request of several businessmen, Andrews ran for mayor in 1891 and won.  Mayor Andrews became Mayor of s2m2 at a time that s2m2’s growth and outlook was good. However, his term ended as s2m2 and the nation were entering an economic depression that caused many banks and businesses to close.
